The bed consisted of plywood on a wood frame, on top of which we placed foam pads, sleeping bags, and pillows.
At night, the bed was lowered to rest upon bolts through the two sternmost
sets of stanchions, just above the level of the steam engine. Since I was
concerned about rolling out of bed into the water, Al tied a rope “railing”
along my side of the bed. Fortunately, I never did roll overboard.

During the day, the entire bed was raised and suspended just below the
canopy.
